As of 2016, Indonesia is the 11th top country with the highest coal reserves in the world. The record shows it contains over 25 thousand million tonnes of coal reserves which are over 250% of its annual consumption. The record itself discloses that in the upcoming years, Indonesia Coal Exports in 2021 will boost from 203 million tonnes per six months to 2 thousand million tonnes. However, the condition stands that China and India will be the largest buyers according to the forecast.

To begin with, Indonesia exports coal to China, Japan, India, and South Korea in extreme amounts. However, rumours are that in the upcoming ten or twelve years, China and India will probably drop the imports of coal from Indonesia by switching their mainstream transitioning tactics to cleaner energy. Not only this, but one of the executive directors of IESR has also confirmed such implementation being planned.

As of 2021, Indonesia’s Top 10 Export list with Cybex.in confirms that each year, the country sells up to 80% of produced coal to the global markets, including the four mentioned above. As a result, it remains at the beneficial ground of international trade. But, in 10 years, Indonesia Coal Exports in 2021 is predicted to drop because Japan and South Korea are also moving towards the usage of renewable energy due to reasons and side effects of pollution.

Of course, Indonesian Coal Exports benefited the countries at large in the past. Take a glance of statistics related to Indonesia Coal Exports from the 1900s to 2021:

Where does Indonesia Export Coal to?

Indonesia main trading partners, in particular of purchasing coal at large, are India (10 million tonnes in 2019, only 4.4 million tonnes in 2021, downslide by 25%), China (18.6 million tonnes approximately in June 2021), South Korea (1.5 million tonnes in 2021), Japan (1.1 million tonnes in 2021), Malaysia (2.2 million tonnes in 2021), and Taiwan (1.9 million tonnes in the same year).

In the past few years, for example, from 2019 to 2021, India has displayed a drastic change in its need for coal. The reason being, India itself is the second most coal mining country in India after Australia. It produces over 700 million tonnes of coal approximately on an annual basis. Nevertheless, after India’s Self-Reliant Movement, it is taking a step back from bulk imports.

Does Indonesia Export Coking Coal?

The answer is NO. Indonesia reserves all the coking coal that is produced on an annual basis because of its scarcity. According to the research, the production of Coking Coal is only 6.2% of the total production of coal in the country.

How much coal does Indonesia Import?

Indonesia rarely imports coal as it is the third-largest country in the world when it comes to coal reserves. According to the Indonesia Import Data, up until now, it has imported 7 thousand tonnes of coal from countries that are disclosed as re-exports only.
